“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” This is the preamble of the US Constitution.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. ” The main sentence from the Declaration of Independence that everyone so often quotes or remembers…

I am reminded of these two sentences today because of a film that has nothing and everything to do with these two sentences – District 9. I know you are thinking how in the hell can that film have anything to do with them? It occurred to me while watching the film just how “accurate” Neill Blomkamp scenario was in consideration with history and human nature. Just how close it was to how “We the People” treat each other, or outsiders. It disturbs me greatly to think on how truly disgusting, arrogant, selfish, egocentric and destructive We the People are. If aliens did in fact land on this planet I would not be surprised one ounce if just such a scenario played out or if they simply destroyed us because we weren’t worth saving.

We constantly set violence upon those who are simply seeking life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We use the vestiges of establishing Justice, Unity, general Welfare. or common defence as convenient excuses to enslave, destroy, ruin, cheat, murder, or steal from our fellow man. We force our values on others, we think we know the right way – We the People must be right.

We are instinctively suspicious of anyone or thing that is not just like us. Instead of normal curiosity our culture breeds this as fear. We really haven’t changed much in two thousand years. We the People are a self-destructive being. We the People are a selfish being. We the People are an arrogant being.

What things have We the People done that were NOT in its own self interest or self-preservation?

Now tell me this -

What things have We the People done that WERE in its own self-interest or self preservation?

Every culture – every part of We the People across the world is guilty of crimes against itself. These things that the American founding fathers wrote down are ideals, theories, hopes… dreams. These are things that represent what they felt were the core of a “civilized” human society. We the People have forgotten them. They are like strange flashes of clarity amongst the insanity of fear and drama that we have allowed ourselves to be wrapped inside. We have replaced them with material, media and the pursuit of money. We are not forming a more perfect Union but a fractured confederacy of partisanship full of bickering old men who are more concerned with the needs of special interest groups than they are with the needs of the uneducated or the poor. How are we insuring domestic Tranquility when we can’t feed our own people, house our own people – when children are denied basic human needs. Where is the promoting of the general Welfare? Why can’t We the People see that Healthcare, Education and Communication are the three most important elements that will lead us to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Today’s “modern” journalists, whom we often call the media, are rampant with overly dramatic fear mongering editorialists in the guise of factual “news” reporters. Rather than focusing on facts and reporting on the real issues they manipulate the masses with agendas from their sponsors. We are so willing to believe what we read on the internet and see on TV. We want to believe that our way is the right way, that any other system is wrong. We are so willing to embrace the box that we can’t let go of it to look outside. We are a dying, stagnating culture of couch potatoes longing for the glory days and feeding upon our own flesh like the culture cannibals that we have become.

We the People often talk over the Earth, of global warming, of species going extinct. We the People discuss our impact upon nature as if we were her master. We the People still don’t get it. The Earth will adapt. We the People won’t. The Earth will adapt us right off its surface. We the People aren’t killing the earth, we are killing ourselves. We should have bumper stickers that say save the humans. Because if We the People really wanted to save the earth – we’d all commit suicide. I guarantee you that if we disappeared now that the earth would “recover” rapidly.

We the People are a plague, a virus. Some of us are aware of this destructive tendency. Thousands if not millions of us suggest cures everyday -but who can focus on a cure when they have mouths to feed, or cancer to fight, or can’t even read.  We have mutated into a malignant self-devouring creature, very much like Ouroboros except we won’t be recreating ourselves but eating ourselves out of existence. We the People must awaken to our destructive nature. We must find a way to globally pursue life, liberty and happiness or there will be no more perfect Union.
